FIFA World Cup 2014 Live Updates, Netherlands vs Mexico: Netherlands beat Mexico 2-1 to reach quarters
Somehow Netherlands stole the win to go through to the quarter-finals! A brilliant Mexico have been knocked-out! 1-0 up till Sneijder equalized for the Dutch before Robben went down in the penalty box to allow Huntelaar to score through a penalty to make it 2-1 to Netherlands!
90+3 Min: PENALTY! Marquez brings down Robben! Huntelaar to take it… and SCORES! GOAL!!! 2-1 to Netherlands! What drama!
87 Min: GOAL! Sneijder! The midfielder unleashes a drive of the highest quality to give Netherlands the equalizer!!! 1-1! We are surely going to have extra-time again! After yesterday’s Brazil-Chile game!
85 Min: Ochoa is at it again to deny Van Persie’s substitute Huntelaar’s volley on the stretch from point-blank range – but the flag is up. Still a wonderful stop
77 Min: Second water-break of the match! Really nice to see that a football match has such breaks! The players must be glad!
74 Min: SAVE! Ochoa with another save to keep Mexico in it! This time he keeps out a low shot from Robben
68 Min: Robben diving quite a bit there! Twice the winger tries to win an Oscar!
60 Min: Robben runs around the Mexican defence before feeding it to Sneijder who takes a shot with his left! The attempt hits Mexican bodies to go for a corner.
57 Min: SAVE AND POST! A Robben corner finds De Vrij in the midst of chaos but the defender taps the ball towards goal bringing out Ochoa to save well as the ball then hits the post and is cleared by the Mexicans!
56 Min: Super-sub Memphis Depay comes on for Netherlands!
50 Min: Herrera takes a free-kick from out on the right. Marquez skies his header well above! That was a chance to double the lead for La Tri! Momentum with Mexico here!
48 Min: GOAL!!! Dos Santos scores a beauty! Vlaar leaps high to clear a Mexican attack but his clearance falls for the marauding midfielder as the former Barcelona man comes into the center and shoots into the goal!
Second-half: The game is restarted and we’re back! Who will break the deadlock? Diego Reyes comes on for the injured Moreno for the Mexicans.
HALF-TIME
Mexico have edged a half that ends with La Tri pulling several saves from Cillessen. There were also two main possible penalties for either side that weren’t given!
45+2 Min: Hector Moreno who was involved in the clash to stop Robben from scoring has been stretchered off due to an injury!
45+1 Min: Rafael Marquez does a Steven Gerrard there and slips to let in Van Persie get to it before feeding a through ball to Robben who is then dispossessed by Marquez! Netherlands should have capitalized there!
42 Min: SAVE! Cillessen saves a Dos Santos right-footer! A great play by the Mexicans sees the ball fall for the little midfielder who takes a shot at goal from his weaker side from a tight angle! Good save!
41 Min: De Vrij sends in a floated pass for Van Persie and the striker lets it pass ahead of him and by the time he gets to blast it at goal, it’s cleared for a corner! Nothing much from the Dutch corner.
35 Min: And… we’re back! Looked like it did well to freshen up both sides! All players are looking thankful for that little break there! Mexico back with possession!
32 Min: COOLING BREAK! The players all race to the touchline to have some much-needed fluid given how hot it is. This is officially the first cooling break of the #FIFA World Cup 2014! The time taken for the break will be added on at the end of this half.
29 Min: SAVE! Easy one for Cillessen! Peralta goes past two on the edge of the box, allowing Dos Santos to take over and hit a low shot straight at the keeper.
27 Min: Lovely first touch from RVP as he brings Verhaegh’s clipped pass down in the area with his left foot – almost to his toes there, but he can’t get a decent connection on it as his right foot across the ball sees the effort high and wide!
23 Min: SAVE! Cillessen called into action! Carlos Salcido controls the ball well while running towards the centre before taking a shot at goal! Straight at the Dutch keeper to save! Mexico are really up at Netherlands here! No rest for Louis van Gaal’s men! Corner!
20 Min: PENALTY SHOUT! Herrera bursts past Vlaar in the area and then sees his attempt to nod it into his own path stopped by a dangerously high boot from the defender. Mexico want a penalty, but the referee’s not having any of it! Only a penalty for the Mexicans!
17 Min: HUGE CHANCE FOR MEXICO! A high ball into the area is chested down by Peralta who manages to work the ball across goal. It finally comes to Herrera who drags his shot from 10 yards agonisingly wide of the post.
14 Min: Layun romps to the left byline and curls a lovely ball across the six-yard box that Dos Santos is a whisker away from converting! Chance for the Mexicans there!
9 Min: Sneijder tries to whip a free kick from the left into the area with pace but doesn’t get it beyond the first man. Terrible attempt by one of the best midfielders on a good day!
6 Min: Layun again cutting inwards into goal and taking a shot! But this time it’s low and wide off target! The midfielder is looking lively for the Mexicans!
3 Min: Miguel Layun brings the ball in from the left and drills a 30 yarder a few yards over the top! Nice try!
Kick-off: The national anthems are up and the Portuguese referee Pronca gets the game underway! Kuyt starts for the Dutch, while Captain Robin Van Persie returns after suspension in place of Jeremain Lens and Paul Verhaegh makes just his third international appearance in place of Daryl Janmaat.
Mexico coach Miguel Herrera makes just one change from his side’s 3-1 win over Croatia last time out as Carlos Salcido replaces the suspended Jose Vazquez.
